Weekend Would You Rather - Motorcycle

I had a motorcycle for two years while I was at BYU. It was a lot of fun to ride, yet when I sold it, I breathed a little sigh of relief that I had never gotten into an accident. You have to be ultra-defensive when you ride a motorcycle because other drivers are accustomed to looking for SUV's and sedans, so motorcycles sometimes get overlooked.

I'm curious to know if you would rather have a motorcycle

or

not have one at all.

Any stipulations?

A Weekend Would You Rather! We haven't had one of these in ages!

Yes, I want a motorcycle, but I only want one for about a year, and that will suit me nicely. I just want the experience, you know? Actually, maybe one of those scooters would suffice.

NO. (Sorry) The first time I got on a motorcycle (with me at the the controls, no less) I ran into a barbed wire fence. Luckily, the fence stopped me from going over about a 20 foot drop off. I didn't get cut or burned, but I did get pretty bunged up. The next time was a 100 mile trip in cold pouring rain.

I'll take a car any day.

Anyway, I thought you wanted a truck? :)

No. At least not right now, and probably never. It's all well and good for my parents right now. Too much money and no one they're responsible for. Even then I'd rather they lived to a ripe old age for my kids' sake. But definitely not for me now while I'm young. And even when I'm old and crazy, I don't think I'd ever want to ride on surface streets because it's just so dangerous.

No no and also no.

I had to go pick Aaron up from a rental car place tonight (he was in an accident a few days ago that put his car permanently out of commission) and on my way there I saw a horrific accident scene involving a motorcycle and a small car. The people in the small car probably survived but from what I saw I doubt the motorcyclist did. It made me sick.

We will never. EVER. own a motorcycle.

(word verification: inside. As in, better off INSIDE a car)

Yeah No. Unless there were like motorcycle only roads or something. I can see the draw...the wind rushing through your hair, flexibility, sight seeing, but...scary! I worried about Blaine driving that little Yaris, I can't imagine how worried I would be having him drive a motorcycle.

my word verification is mangedor. So I see no subliminal input there.

Since graduating I have always said if I could do college again I would have bought a scooter (does that count as a motorcycle?). The parking alone wow! So I think you did it exactly right, have it in school sell it when your done.
I wouldn't have one now and I wouldn't want Will to have one, they are simply too dangerous BUT I do love riding them. I just want to know someone who has one who can take me for a ride once in a while.

I am not a big fan of road bikes because of the bad accidents. (Dave will never own one because I dont want him dead.) I would however take a dirt bike anyday and ride it on trails! Then, the only thing I have to worry about hitting is a tree or a deer :)

Dan refuses to ever even ride a motorcycle because they are so dangerous and he knows he'll love it :) I used to think that was silly, but after working on the neurocognitive rehab floor with motorcycle accident patients, I might have to agree. Then again, we grossly underestimate the risk we take every time we get in a car...

This is a tough one. I grew up riding motorcycles (my dad works for Harley Davidson), and I LOVE to ride with him, but I'm also very aware of the danger. I trust him because he's been riding for so many years; I don't know that I'd ever ride with anyone else. I've seen guys on motorcycles do some pretty stupid things. I myself would love to learn to drive one, but on back country roads, never in traffic.

I've been in two motorcycle accidents, neither of which were remotely my fault, and decided to not tempt fate. However, we have a couple of scooters and buzz around on them now and then keeping off really busy roads and they seem like they're about as risky as riding a bicycle in traffic. Still a bit risky, but nothing like riding my Suzuki to Provo and back to SLC on the freeway every day.

So, the answer, if you have to have one, make it a scooter.

Nope. No. No motorcycle. No scooter. No two wheel vehicles for me (last time I rode a bike on a busy public California street I almost died). I'll take my car or my own two feet.

@ Sherry - A scooter would be fun. Very different from a motorcycle, though.

@ Packrat - I DO want a truck, when the time is right. It's the motorcycle I'm not sure about.

@ Gretchen - I agree - the whole family responsibility argument is convincing.

@ Kayla - Sounds like the timing of this post made it a very easy answer for you. Yikes.

@ Kristi - Funny you mention the wind rushing through your hair. It's not like that if you wear a helmet, so it's always tempting not to wear one. I knew it wasn't smart when I didn't wear my helmet (maybe 1/3 of the time?), but it made it 500% more fun.

@ Julie - You can't get better than motorcycle parking at BYU unless you're a dean. It was really nice.

@ Ashley - Too true. Dirt bikes, even though they have their own dangerous temptations, are a blast. And they minimize danger from other vehicles as long as you find the right places to ride. That said, I've known two people who have been in bad motorcycle accidents. One was on a street bike, the other was on a dirt bike in the desert.

@ Lisa - So true. And the shower!

@ Melanie - I had no idea your dad worked for HD. How cool is that?!

@ Douglas - I originally went in to buy a scooter and came out with a motorcycle. Lol.

@ Carly - Sounds like you're firmly in the no camp. Did you never go on my motorcycle?

I'll settle for rides on somebody else's motorcycle. It's so stinkin' FUN but I think it's too risky to own one and thus drive it on a regular basis. My dating-years rides suit me just fine. Good weekend would you rather.

Bart said...

@ Kristy - They ARE fun, aren't they? I tried to always make sure people who rode with me wore a helmet, even if I often didn't wear one myself. I don't know what I would have done had someone been hurt when riding with me. Yikes. That's another reason I may never get another. We'll see.
