Janssen's blog is an impressive mix of book reviews and other book/reading/library-related posts and fun, sometimes snarky, sometimes sweet, sometimes ranting, often enthusiastic, and always interesting posts about all sorts of things.
I, however, chose not to follow a specific theme with my blog. And I think that's what has made it so difficult for me to write consistently. I've also questioned the worth of writing a blog. It takes time and thought to write things of worth (a relative and elusive concept itself). It can be a big investment, and I've been questioning what the return is, and whether the return is worth the investment.
One of the most important things a blogger can do to make his blog more credible, in my opinion, is to write consistently. It adds a sense of priority and importance. It makes it clear that the blog will live on regardless of the number of comments - that there are things to be said that stand on their own. Consistent posts add up over time. Ten posts hardly comprise a blog, no matter their quality.
The other element of blogging I've struggled with is topic choice. I admittedly enjoy getting comments. So I've sometimes catered my posts to what I think readers will like rather than just writing what I feel like writing. And I think that's fine, to an extent, as long as I can strike a nice balance of being true to my own interests while catering to what I think readers will find interesting. Like most things in life, the balanced approach is probably the best approach as long as I can stay authentic.
For now, I'm going to stick with my unthemed blog, but I'm going to post more consistently, and I'd like to know what topics you all think are interesting - especially those that overlap with my interests.
So let me know your preferences, if you would. I like all of the following broad topics (this is a quick list), and I'd also be grateful for any suggestions you may have that seem like things I might want to blog about.
- Personal Finances
- Health and Fitness
- Accounting and Finance
- Business and Careers
- Home and Family Life
- Education, Reading, and Learning
- Music

For one thing, everyone seems to like your "Would you Rathers?" I like them because they are fun, and because your sense of fun, and sense of humour comes through in them. So I guess my point is, I like your personal look at things--whatever the topic might be.
I always like home and family life! And more pictures:)
I found this post really interesting. It made me contemplate how fascinating and versatile the blogging world is. It has literally created a blogging culture. My blog is just sort of a family journal. If Will did a blog it would probably be about sports or politics. It's true you do have to have something to keep you going. And kids provide plenty of that!!! Do you think you'll start a "family" blog when you guys have kids? I would even enjoy a "Janssen and Bart Blog" I enjoy hearing about what people are doing, and I LOVE pictures.
For the benefit of anyone else with Julie's question about our family blog, here's what I told her in reply:
Hey Julie,
Thanks for the comment. We do have a family blog: http://26vibrations.blogspot.com. I end up doing most of the posting, but Janssen posts from time to time, and we try to put more pictures and life events on there than on our separate blogs.
I always enjoy your posts.
Bart
I like your Would-You-Rathers and was thinking the other day I needed to leave you a gentle reminder that it's about time to do another.
If you write about the (what I like to call) "serious subjects" make sure you keep them shorter and easier to understand. Break them up if you have to. Whenever someone writes long, thorough posts about finance my eyes tend to cross and I just click to the next post in my reader. Shorter, easier to understand stuff though? I'm totally down with all those subjects you listed.
Steve Palmer has told me that if I am going to be professional I need to choose a theme for my blog. It's hard. So I am with you.
I enjoy the randomosity!
I don't understand why you don't want to post about your shoes....
I actually really like your academicy pensive posts--you are one of only a handful of non-girly blogs I read (all you men even have your own Google Reader Folder, appropriately entitled "Non-Girly Blogs")--and I really like your variety of topics.
But seriously, why not post about your shoes? I could move you to the "Shoe Addict" folder! ;o)
xox
I like the would you rathers too -- and pretty much anything you write about, even though with the finance stuff I don't really understand it :)
In addition to everyone else, I do enjoy the would you rathers. That being said, I for one would be really interested in "Accounting and Finance" posts. It's always interesting to see what I deal with on a daily basis at work be broken down into basic applicable principles as viewed by someone else (particularly as you head off to PWC).
